Call For Ivan Fisk Scholarship Applications
3 August 2007
Skills4Work is calling for applications for the annual Ivan Fisk Memorial Scholarship awards.
The awards offer financial grants for use in study towards a diploma or degree at level five and above.
The Ivan Fisk Memorial Scholarships are named in recognition of the late Ivan Fisk for his efforts to help New Zealanders advance their engineering careers from apprenticeship level to higher national qualification level..
The Ivan Fisk Memorial Scholarship fund is $12,000 per year and scholarships are awarded each December for study in the following year.
Skills4Work Regional Manager, Jim Sharp, a member of the scholarship committee, says the recipients will already have achieved good results through their apprenticeships and earlier studies.
Applicants must have been successful in their work and study to NZQA Level 4. They will also exhibit a well-rounded interest in sporting, community and family commitments but most importantly, they must have a strong desire to further their career in the engineering trade industry, says Mr Sharp.
Ivan Fisks son, Cameron, who also assists on the grants committee, says that by helping young people to advance their careers to higher national qualifications, the awards support Ivans efforts to help solve the shortage of tradespeople in management positions.
The awards encourage young people in the engineering and manufacturing industries to broaden their education and enhance their career prospects, says Mr Fisk.
Dozens of successful young apprentices have already taken advantage of the awards. One recipient of a scholarship for the 2006 year is Aucklander Joel Glass who was awarded around $2000 to study a Post Graduate Diploma in Business at the University of Auckland.
I did my apprenticeship in plastics engineering, but wanted to get into management. I?ve worked in places where management is not always appreciative of their workers, and I wanted to help change that by gaining a management qualification that would enable me to work better with people. The scholarship has been a great help with my fees.
Receiving an Ivan Fisk Scholarship has also enabled Whakatanes Rozelle Cunningham to embark on her Level 5 Maintenance and Diagnostics qualification.
Winning the grant really pushed me to do it - the scholarship has paid for my first enrolment package.
Now well into her first year of the new qualification through the Open Polytechnic, Rozelle encourages others to apply.
Itâs not hard to apply. Just go for it youâve got to be in to win!
The Ivan Fisk Memorial Scholarships are made possible through the Auckland Engineering Apprenticeship Trust, Skills4Work and the family of the late Ivan Fisk.
The closing date for entries is Friday 28 September 2007.
