How Do I Get Into an Apprenticeship?
Step 1 - What qualifications/unit standards/personal qualities do I need?
Entry from School
Students attending secondary school are best suited if they have studied: Mathematics, English, Science, Workshop/Design Technology, Physics, Graphics, Chemistry and completed engineering unit standards if offered
Entry from a Polytechnic
Employers will look favourably on any related course of study undertaken at a tertiary level. An achievement of 50 credits minimum is a good indication.
Entry from Employment
Work experience is always highly valued by employers. As there is no age limit to entering an apprenticeship, people already working in industry can start at any time.
Personal Qualities
A potential apprentice should demonstrate they can effectively and confidently communicate to other people and enjoy working as part of a team.
Above all, the most important qualities a potential employer is looking for is the three A's:
Attendance - how well have you attended school or Polytechnic. Your academic record will be an excellent indicator of your attendance. A good attendance record and consistency with grades is required
Attitude - Do you have the right attitude to learn and succeed? Do you really WANT this opportunity?
Aptitude - What achievements are you proud of? E.g. school/polytechnic projects or projects at your place of employment?
Step 2 - Do I need to do a Pre-Apprentice course?

Step 3 - Get a job.

Send your CV with a covering letter to companies telling them that you are interested in becoming an apprentice
Approach the industry with the intention of gaining work experience or part-time work. Many apprenticeships are obtained by a person establishing a good working relationship with a company rather than through answering advertisements in the paper
Keep an eye on the situations vacant column of the newspaper
Check the vacancies listed on this website offered by employers or through the ATNZ Plan
